Accentuation

Other Diacritic Marks  Spanish writing uses graphic signs called acentos de intensidad (intensive accent marks). The marks are verbally applied, signaling to readers or speakers to elevate their tone of voice or to extend the syllable.

Accent Marks Accent name Example
´ acute word - last syllable papá, sofá, balón
´ grave word – accent falls on second-to-last syllable inútil, álbum, Héctor
´ Proparoxytone - esdrújula word – accent falls on the third-to-last syllable Teléfono, helicóptero, rápido
´ Superproparoxytone- sobre esdrújula word - accent falls on the fourth-to-last syllable (or three syllables away from the last syllable) gánatela, dígamelo, llévatela
